Yes it doesn't make sense.

I also tried without success:

sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=17
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada1 bs=512 count=40
gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptboot -i 1 ada1
