Well, then I will most humbly eat some crow, and apologize for this non-bug
report.  I've closed as 'Not A Bug', although 'Works As Intended' may be
equally applicable.  Thanks for the helpful advice.  UTF-8 LANG seems to be the
best way of getting these chars through.

Now if only I could get a decent cjk font on this freebsd desktop...
