I'd suggest testing with a single card first, to rule out some potential PCIe
bifurcation* problems. My single SM961 works as expected under Linux (some
random LiveCD I downloaded), but gives the "resetting controller" message under
FreeBSD.
A lot of stuff makes an assumption about there being a single "thing" in a PCIe
slot. There seem to be 2 types of PCIe / NVMe multi-module adapters. The first
just takes the 4 lanes from each NVMe and puts them on the PCIe bus - so a 2 *
M.2 adapter uses 8 PCIe lanes, 4 for each NVMe. The other type has a PCIe /
PCIe bridge on the board.
