I can not even tell if it is some form of
deadlock vs. livelock or what all else is
holding the lock over time (or even at the
failure).

Someone that knows what they are doing for
use of dump files for amd64 might be able
to learn what what was holding the lock at
the time of the failure. That might start
to give a somewhat better clue about what
was going on.
