Problem described continues to exist on the following present-day FreeBSD
releases (I've tested all of them; I did not test x86):

* 10.3-RELEASE amd64
* 11.0-RELEASE amd64
* 12.0-CURRENT amd64 (r309773)

Getting traction on this is important due to the EoL of the 9.x series as of
January 1st 2017, compounded by the ports infrastructure strongly advocating
ceasing use of 9.x (see ports r431746 for proof).
