I am having the same problem with a Thinkpad T440p.
I'm not running the most current current, but I didn't see any i915-related svn
commits since. From uname:

11.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 11.0-CURRENT #0 r297046: Sat Mar 19 02:16:14 EDT 2016

The cpu is:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4300M CPU @ 2.60GHz (2594.05-MHz K8-class CPU)

When I load i915kms from /boot/loader.conf it will show the system booting and
then go black. No amount of blindly typing in l/p/shutdown works, so I have to
power cycle. Booting with that line commented out in loader.conf works fine,
and I can then kldload i915kms without issue.

I'm not sure what more information I can provide that will be useful, but
please let me know, I'm eager to help.
