Ok -- I tried moving the hits to /boot/device.hints rather than
/boot/loader.conf.  Unfortunately the errors persist:

They occur in pairs -- if one channel goes, the other follows next.  When the
channel with the boot disk on times-out, the system freezes for 10-20 seconds
before resuming.  

This is really hurting :(
