Besides the behavior of the installation process, is there anything we need to
change as part of the release cycle so that we create images that will boot on
the machines in question?

Using sysctl or smbios to determine what to do only works for the installation
process, not the release cycle.

Isn't it safer to have x86 images (created by the release process) use MBR and
not GPT and leave GPT got the installation process?
