Xorg works fine as well.

Both of these scenarios halt the system upon boot:
kern.vty=vt
radeonkms_load="YES"

#kern.vty=vt
radeonkms_load="YES"

However,

  kern.vty=vt 

boots fine, and after signing in, I can kldload the driver without any issues.
