Bill Paul fixed this for the exopc; the same bug and fix is here:

However, it's not clear why it works. It may be something else besides the xorg driver as I have no issues with Linux + intel drivers on a 2011 era Ubuntu (but a 2011 era FreeBSD suffered the same fate; I ran with VESA since then.)
