No idea if that HDD is damaged or the case/cable, but result is that complete X hangs on I/O errors on the device.
cpu, load, ints, ... all ok, nothing shows blockage of performance, but system blocks comletely for a few secs
no idea if that can be solved, but would be gret, as it on one side is very anoying and on the other is bad to tell people to use BSD, show them and than that...

produce an I/O error by connecting an damaged disk to your system and mount it( should be still mountable )
