 Thanks for the response.
 
 It's been a while since I've been on a BSD, so I'm a bit rusty.  First let me clarify that I'm setting the DISPLAY as:
 setenv DISPLAY :0 (csh) OR
 export DISPLAY=:0 (bash/sh)
 If those are wrong, let me know.
 
 I tried the Xorg --configure && Xorg -config /path/to/xorg.new thing.  While the X log no longer tells me it can't load the radeon driver (seems to be using the ati driver), it still doesn't startup.  In most cases, I just get a grey background, with no mouse or spinning cursor.
 
 Running from a user account, I get the following:
 
 Xorg or the xinit script:  grey screen, no mouse.  The screen appears to 'dematerialize' over time.
 startx gnome: crashes on 'illegal command xterm'.  Also complains at startup/shutdown about 'Bad display name :0'.
 
 Running gdm from the root acct, I just get the grey bkgd, no mouse.
 
 So at this point, I'm really not at all sure if this is X related (I think so), or how much has to do with gnome.
 
 Here are the files you requested.  By boot-verbose, I have assumed you meant boot in verbose mode, and send a copy of /var/log/messages.  But before I go off into the files, thanks guys.
