Switching virtual consoles or keyboard qualifiers such as CAPS LOCK, or NUM
LOCK, freezes my computer for a fraction of a seconds. This causes hard disk
and audio to stall and mute (if displaying text consoles) or make snarling
noises (if displaying X11).

I have a USB keyboard. dmesg below with angle brackets replaced by parentheses,
but first my kernel configuration:
