Support from the PHP team ends in a couple of days (end of this upcoming
month); the expiry date is set to 2008-08-08, that should give us enough
flexibility to deprecate it and perhaps do whatever you want to do with
it in the mean time? (I fear something like FreeBSD 4.x will happen
else :))
