usb keyboard

Synopsis:
During initial installation of FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE i386, OS does not
recognize the USB keyboard after third stage boot.

Environment:
installing rel. 6.2 from CD, HW is Dell OptiPlex 745 SF with USB
connected keyboard and mouse

Description:
when installing from CD, keyboard is recognized during initial boot
phases, which allows escape to loader prompt from beastie menu and various
interactions from loader prompt. However, when boot continues to
sysinstall (the first program is country selection), keyboard is no longer
effective.

the loader shows usual variables, such as
hint.atkbd.0.at=atkbdc
hint.atkbd.0.irq=1
hint.atkbdc.0.at=isa
hint.atkbdc.0.port=0x060

when run without any changes, loader finds various usb and uhub deviecs,
and during hw scan states also
kbd0 at atkbd0
and then runs sysinstall (inoperative since keyboard is not recognized)

when these four hints are unset at loader prompt, the statements such as
kbd0 at atkbd0 (and several other ones) are not there any more.
Nevertheless, the country selection program still does not accept any
keyboard input.

The only related info in FAQ was a statement "FreeBSD supports USB
keyboards out-of-the-box", which turned out not to be the case here :-(
The FAQ answer then proceeds to describe how to enable USB keyboard
support using kbdcontrol command, presumably on an already installed
system ...

Could you help me with this problem?
regards
Jan Muller
