AthlonXP-M (UnKnown Unknown) errors in kernel compile

System is AMD AthlonXP-M 1500+ on a Sony VAIO Laptop PCG-FXA53.

Using FreeBSD5.4-i386-RELEASE. Installs just fine from CD(s). Once in
/usr/src, I make a customer kernel config, etc...

# config UNIX
# cd ../compile/UNIX
# make depend
# make
<-- output omited -->
(insn 976 5590 980 43 (UnKnown Unknown) -1 (nil)
internal compiler error: in extract_insn, at recog.c:2083

This was a build for the kernel; I am also unable to compile any
ports; simply to say.

I've installed FreeBSD4.10 and 4.11 too, to check functionality and
make sure it's not the hardware; and in fact, everything works jus
fine in 4.x; I'm guessing some compile options, or gcc?

Please do advise. Thank you in advance.
