 I get the same problem on FreeBSD 4.9p5.
 
 I compiled gtar-1.13.25_8 (ports/archivers/gtar as of 2004-04-27), after
 editing Makefiles in the work area to add -g...
 
 % cd work/tar-1.13.25/src
 % gdb
