 I have the same problem:
 
   ad0: TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA retrying (2 reties left)
   ata0: resetting devices
   ad0: FAILURE - already active DMA on this device
   ad0: setting up DMA failed
   [only reset helps]
 
 I tried three different harddisks (IBM/Seagate) and two different 
 (UDMA-)cables without any change. The system still crashes under heavy IO 
 load! In PIO mode everything works fine but *very* slow...
