FreeBSD prost.limitless.co.uk 5.2-RC FreeBSD 5.2-RC #0: Tue Dec 23 22:50:28 GMT 2003 wisner at prost.limitless.co.uk:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386
>Description:
Sometime since 5.1-RELEASE, it has become impossible to use a vinum volume as a swap device. Attempts to mount a vinum volume as swap yield the error: swapon: /dev/vinum/swap: Operation not supported by device. The upshot is that anybody using vinum for swap who upgrades to 5.2 will lose access to swap devices.

This problem was discussed three months ago on the freebsd-current mailing list (see http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2003-September/011233.html).

I have marked this bug as high priority because if (as seems quite likely) it is not fixed for 5.2-RELEASE, it needs to be documented so that sites with such a configuration know of the problem before attempting to upgrade. I was caught flat-footed by this, and would have been even more so if it had been an important production server I upgraded.
>How-To-Repeat:
Try to activate a vinum volume as a swap device.
