Gmake bug?

I'm using FreeBSD 5.1, i386 and had trouble building java 1.3.

I sent a transcript of the build to the maintainer of java 1.3 and he 
said gmake bombed at some point.

Is anyone else having trouble with gmake?

I'm using version 3.8 (built from the ports directory) under gcc 3.2.2 
(I had trouble building Postgres under the gcc that came with the system 
and it was fixed by upgrading to gcc 3.2.2).
