Just had a thought. I encountered the same issue with a usb3-connected hd
(this time with amd64 desktop) a few years ago and it had to do with allowing
usb3 devices to settle before zfs loads, as the usb3 device is also the zpool
device. It might be that usb is taking time to load and zfs happens before
that happens by default, so nothing gets loaded.
