Brevity triumphed over clarity. The "out of swap" messages 
appeared in the (discarded) case where both swap and 
everything else were on the same microSD card. 16 GB wasn't 
quite enough to let buildworld/buildkernel finish. The failure
was lack of storage space, the "out of swap" a side effect.  

The logfiles presented were subsequent to that failure, 
with extra space for /usr/src provided on a USB flash drive.
