Creating ports

Hi All,
What's the definite reference to cross-compiling ports for the
raspberry pi?
I have succeeded in setting up qemua per:
https://wiki.freebsd.org/QemuUserModeHowTo
The problem is that it is very, very slow. Running this on my Intel(R)
Core(TM) i7-4810MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz laptop, with FreeBSD installed in
virtualbox.
In the second half it talks about the host cross compiler, but the
steps don't work for me. After the chroot can't see how using local
headers would work.
So what's the best way of compiling packages these days?
