i386 hasn't been supported for some time.  i486 remains supported but
only for UP systems.  This means that 64-bit f_offset ops could be
managed by using DI/EI (which is probably going to be cheaper than an
explicit lock).  SMP is only supported on Pentium and later.

Of course, there sre still the ARM, MIPS and PPC architectures to support.
