I've found that you need to build and install linux_base directly on amd64
so it doesn't try to install amd64 versions of files. When built in a
submake with ARCH defined, the override of ARCH required to cause the i386
version to be installed doesn't work.
Any statement of the form "X is the one, true Y" is FALSE.
