http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/releasenotes_ws55.html#bb_64

is not supported, Workstation does not support 64-bit guest operating
systems. If your host machine has a supported 64-bit processor, you
can run supported 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems in either the
host or a guest, in any combination.

so it is possible to run 64-bit guest on 32-bit host OS, as long as
the CPU is supported.
