Can't label anything from within sysinstall

Ok, for the record: I ran the fixit shell, used dd(1) on the disk, wrote
the bsdlabel and then _rebooted_ to get things working. Just
"restarting" sysinstall isn't good enough, it totally messes up the
serial console and prints "disk full" warnings.
