The ever-vigilant bde caught these issues, and I've been working
on an improved version since my follow-up post on the 16th.  I have
a much-safer version that I'm going to commit later today (unless
Bruce found something else wrong in it...).

And here I thought this was going to be such a simple little target.
It's surprising how tricky it is to get it absolutely correct...
