Are you willing to work with D.Mills to add an "quiet" flag to ntpdate?
Our boot is now much more verbose with things like:

    Setting date via ntp.
    Looking for host time.foo1.com and service ntp
    host found : time.foo1.com
    Looking for host time.foo1.com and service ntp
    host found : time.foo1.com
    Looking for host ntp.foo2.com and service ntp
    host found : ntp.foo2.com
    Looking for host ntp.foo3.com and service ntp
    host found : ntp.gw.foo3.com
    Looking for host ntp.foo4.com and service ntp
    host found : ntp.foo4.com
    Looking for host ntp2.foo5.com and service ntp
    host found : ntp2.foo5.com
