According to the maintainer, the principal differences are:

1) The source from Debian (x11-fonts/indic-ttf) is a more complex set
of font families, where the source from Gentoo (x11-fonts/fonts-indic)
contains only the Lohit family (and not every people love it ;-) ).

2) The Lohit subset family from Debian hasn't the support for the Malayalam
language, until now, because for an old problem it doesn't work very well
with the actual rendering engine, where the source from Gentoo has, in any
   way.

3) The fonts from Debian (x11-fonts/indic-ttf) are from the Debian unstable
and are more updated than ones from Gentoo (x11-fonts/fonts-indic), that
   are from the Gentoo stable.
In fact the real modification date of the fonts of the former is
~ Sun May 6 13:0:0 2007, where the real modification date of the fonts
of the later is >= 2004, <= January 2007 and , in the Gentoo source,
only the Lohit Malayalam support has a real modification date of
   January 2008.

With regards to these explanations, I think that it's better to keep
these two separate ports.

Best regards,

Th. Thomas.
