There are no dependencies on building the kernel outside of sys, if you 
are building on a system that's had all the system components 
installed.  You have to build with the 'classic' method of building the 
kernel.  buildkernel does require a source tree.

If there are hidden dependencies (I just checked and there's nothing 
obvious), it's a bug and we'll fix it ASAP.
