Thanks!  Note that ideally USE_GCC will only be used in it's "+" form,
as in USE_GCC=3.4+ to indicate that we need a new feature only present
in GCC 3.4 and above.

Nailing down a port to a single, specific version of GCC is something 
I strongly recommend against if possible.
