"These directions" is the subject.  Actually, "directions" is the
subject, and "These" is an adjective that modifies the subject
specifying which "directions".

	"The dogs are the animals"
and
	"The animals are the dogs"

are not inverted either.  Their meaning can be the same or different
depending on context.

No he isn't.  He is correct.  The verb must agree with the number.
