$ make -V PORTNAME
-s: not found
"Makefile", line 38: warning: " -s" returned non-zero status
homard

I suspect the problem is on line 38:

unames!=${UNAME} -s

Adding this just before it fixes the problem (thanks to stefanf for 
that fix):

.include  <bsd.port.pre.mk>
