Ouch. Why can I never figure things out, _before_ I go babbling about them
on this list.

I am almost through finding the reason, and, of course, it was an error in
some changes I had made to the driver. (Well, actually to some PCI code in
the kernel) On the other machine, for reasons that are to obscure to go
into details with, my code (indirectly) disabled AHC_ULTRA from the set of
features. My only excuse is that it was really really obscure. Had to do
with some changes to some PCI code, and the slots were different. (I feel
very stupid - I have made sure that this kind of silly problems can never
happen again).

Sorry for disturbing you all, and thanks to the everyone that gave me
help!

The IETF has an interesting enough life as is getting the "too simple"
protocols to work sanely, hardware/software providers and sysadmins have a hard
time understanding, implementing and exploiting the "too simple" stuff today.
I.e., imagine MS-mess but on Internet scale, not just desktop-scale. If you
can. ... Scary. Real scary. Halloween stuff, definitely.
