Since you didn't specify the Linux flavor, the kernel version,
the aic7xxx version, or the exact peripheral type, I'm guessing
at this...

The timeout problem sounds like the early 1999 wide/narrow SCSI problem.
Wide SCSI has no problem, but narrow SCSI gets timeouts.  I think it
was aic7xxx 5.1.17 or whatever the version was in RedHat 6.0.  Doug
Ledford fixed it right away, so RH 6.1 is fine, or you can download a
current copy of the Linux kernel source (say, 2.2.13) or apply patches
from Doug's aic7xxx web page:
