RH 6.2 install freezes with AHA-2940U2B & AIC-7899

Anyone have any suggestions for remedying the following situation?

I have an IBM Netfinity 5100R for use with our DLT autoloader with an 
on-board AIC-7899 for the disks.
With only that controller, RH 6.2 installs on the machine fine. 
When I add the card for the DLT (a AHA-2940U2B) it freezes on "Loading 
aic7xxx module...".
If I disable the on-board controller, same problem.
I've used the stock 6.2 module as well as the 5.1.31 driver update disk in 
both configurations to no avail.
