Hi,
we are using an Intel RC2 server, and we are having difficulty in
installing linux on it. The server has a Adaptec AIC 7880 SCSI adapter. The
linux we are using is RedHat 5.2
The problem starts with the SCSI setup. I shall try to give the messages
that appear on the 4th screen (Alt-F4). After I say Yes to the scsi dialog
box the following message appears on the 4 th screen

<6> (scsi 0) <Adaptec AIC - 7880 Ultra scsi host adapter found at PCI 11/0
some more messages
<4> 1 host
<4> vendor Seagate .........
<4> type .........
<4> detected scsi disk sda at scsi 0 , channel 0 , id 0 , lun0

// The server contains 2 more devices 1 hdd and an HP tape.
// even the above message comes after a bit long time ( this may be
incorrect since I have not done any other scsi installation.
// the messages is not written exactly as it appeared since I have no way to
capture the messages.
// after about 30 secs
<4> aborting command due to time out: pid 0, scsi 0, channel 0 id 0 lun 0x00
00 00 00 00
<4> scsi bus is eing reset for host 0, channel 0
<4> (scsi 0:0:1:0) Device reset, message buffer in use.
<4> scsi host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 2) timed out trying harder
<4> scsi bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
// now the other devices are detceted ie tape and hdd.
this is a some what brief description of our problem.
the timeout and reset messages continues but we can go on till the package
installation.
package installation proceeds in a stop and go manner. ie it freezes the
computer for a while and during that time the reset and abort message comes
on the background. but some time the following message also comes
<6> (scsi 0:0:1:0) sync at 40.0 Mbytes/sec offset 8
after about 4..5 minuts of stop and go it stops permenently ie we have
watched for about 15 min.

That is as far as we can come installing linux.

I hope the description is clear . If any additional info is needed we shall
send it immediatly.

I am a final year student at SCT college of engineering at Trivandrum,
Kerala state, India. The machine is in our college and if the installation
could be done our lab will move entirely to linux.
     --regards
      Raj.
