reset loop on boot 2940U with 2.2.1

Our Linux machine of Tyan 1682D mother, Adaptec2940UW scsi card,  has
been running OK with kernel2.0.36 and aic7xxx 5.1.6.

When I upgrade the kernel to 2.2.1 with aic7xxx.5.1.11,
the system does not boot.  SCSI reset loop on detecting an Adaptec
card. (the boot disk is a scsi disk connected to the interface card)


I suspect an similar trouble occurred when we upgraded from 2.0.35 to
2.0.36. (I do not remember the version of aic7xxx driver, with which 
the system boots. )

any suggestion will be appreciated.
