Ultra SCSI drive is not stable...

I have a Micropolis Tomohawk USCSI drive (4.3Gb). I have turned on
Ultra SCSI operation for its ID in my Adaptec 2940AU controller (1.21
bios).

Under Win95 I have no problems. When I try to use it under Linux though
it gets hosed with messages to the effect of "unable to complete SCSI
command" and generates a bunch of SCSI resets. The drive is one FAT32
partition and I thought maybe the Fat32 patch I applied was screwing it
up. But, before I gave up on the patch, I turned off Tagged Queuing and
something about SCBs. Now when I try to use the drive everything seems
to work. But, I have a few dirs on it that have >7000 files and it
takes a LONG time to ls them. I think even Win95 does it faster :-(.

I have Linux on a Jaz disk that is hooked up externally to my 2940 with
a ~6ft cable and the Tomohawk is connected with an internal ~6ft cable.
I thought that maybe I was getting problems because my total cable
length is > 3 meters. Would that be why tagged queueing and scb stuff
didn't work? Am I living on the edge here and putting my 4.3Gb of
important data at risk? Any suggestions on how to make sure I get the
most out of my USCSI disk?

Thanks!
