Sigh ... After running nvidia-xconfig, which created a very basic xorg.conf,
startx now works.  This didn't use to be necessary.

Unfortunately, gdm does not work, and fails with the dreaded "Oh no! Something
has gone wrong." error.  So far, I don't see anything obvious in the log.
