Can't you upgrade it with below?

# pkg upgrade -r FreeBSD-kmods

Now kmod ports are provided per-minor-version basis and definition of the repo
is defined in /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf (in default case for *-Release, points to
quarterly, while others like main [aka -Current] and stable/* points to
latest).
