Simple idea: does ^T (ctrl+t) still show anything when ifconfig "hangs"?
That would at least give us a hint.

Alternative I would suggest to make the rtw88 a passthru device to bhyve and
then things can be debugged more easily from the outside if you can, attaching
kgbd, etc.
