I think this is a regression or rather a change in the Linux firmware KPI.

Someone had a patch for this BUT that did not provide the backwards
compatibility we would still need for drm-kmod.

I fully agree that the panic should not happen and the driver should fail
attaching or wait for firmware "in background" and let the boot continue.
