I need to dig into that in more detail; it seems indeed to come up and
then go away again but I was too blind to spot the reason (when it
wasn't iwlwifi itself).

Have you in the past tried just a
 	service wpa_supplicant restart wlan0
instead?  (sorry debugging with differnt people I cannot always remember).

Also, do you use the laptop in different places / different APs.  Is it
the same everywhere?
