--- Comment #1 from Bjoern A. Zeeb <bz@FreeBSD.org> ---
Intel wireless drivers in FreeBSD do not support hostap mode (iwi, iwn, iwm,
iwx). LinuxKPI for iwlwifi would not either.
See Intel's statement:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000030429/wireless.html
Not entirely correct anymore but I'll leave it at that.
I would at best say that the error message is confusing but trying this with
iwx I see the following during boot:
ifconfig: SIOCIFCREATE2 (wlan0): Device not configured
iwx0: HOSTAP mode not supported
ifconfig: SIOCIFCREATE2 (wlan0): Operation not supported
ifconfig: SIOCIFCREATE2 (wlan101): Device not configured
...
/etc/rc: WARNING: /etc/hostapd.conf is not readable.
/etc/rc: WARNING: failed precmd routine for hostapd
I am tempted to close this as works as expected but someone might want to go
and improve the startup scripts to properly deal with this?
