If the router does not use TKIP then the rebuilding of the kernel will not help
much.

Can you share the full output of:
ifconfig -v wlan0
ifconfig -v wlan0 list scan
grep wpa_supplicant /var/log/messages | tail -100

Maybe that will enlighten us what's really going wrong.
