We exchanged further emails off-list.

It turned out 5Ghz started work later for so far unknown reasons.

The other problem (with the firmware crash) could indeed be caused
by the AP is announcing VHT on 2.4GHz (which it does).

I'll have a look but I likely cannot reproduce this as I do not have an
AP doing so.  If you have an AP announcing VHT on 2.4Ghz please let us
know if iwlwifi works for you with HT/VHT enabled.
