Bug ID: 298982
Summary: jetkvm mass starage dont work after
FreeBSD-EN-26:22.usb
Product: Base System
Version: 15.1-RELEASE
Hardware: amd64
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Some People
Priority: ---
Component: usb
Assignee: usb@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: martin.larsson2@gmail.com
After upgrading the system to FreeBSD 14.5, the machine no longer boots
successfully when JetKVM Virtual Media is enabled.
During boot, the JetKVM USB emulation device is detected as a USB mass storage
device:
umass0: <JetKVM USB Emulation Device ...>
umass0: SCSI over Bulk-Only
umass0: ... Attached to scbus6
The boot process then repeatedly displays:
Root mount waiting for: CAM
After some time, CAM reports errors while probing the emulated USB mass storage
device:
(probe0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): INQUIRY
(probe0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): CAM status: CCB request completed with an error
(probe0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Retrying command, 3 more tries remain
The system remains stuck waiting for CAM and does not proceed with mounting the
ZFS root filesystem.
Disconnecting/ejecting JetKVM Virtual Media immediately resolves the problem.
With Virtual Media disabled, the same machine boots normally.
This setup worked correctly before the FreeBSD upgrade.
The symptoms appear to match FreeBSD-EN-26:22.usb ("umass(4) devices may fail
to attach"), announced 2026-09-29.
Hardware storage detected during boot includes two SATA disks (ada0 and ada1),
and the root filesystem is ZFS (zroot/ROOT/default). The SATA disks themselves
appear to be detected normally.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect a JetKVM to the machine.
2. Enable/mount JetKVM Virtual Media so that its USB mass storage emulation is
presented to the host.
3. Boot FreeBSD 14.5.
4. FreeBSD detects the JetKVM USB emulation device via umass(4).
5. Boot stalls indefinitely with Root mount waiting for: CAM.
6. Disable/eject JetKVM Virtual Media and reboot.
7. FreeBSD boots normally.
