Yes, this was done with a freshly checked-out tree, and I repeated it
yesterday.  But we have an explanation: environment leakage.  Starting a new
shell without environment allowed the build to proceed:

  $ env -i HOME="$HOME" bash --norc

This is a workaround: the environment shouldn't leak.  But it's not a problem
with this port, so I'm closing this report.  I have opened
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=273938 against the ports
build framework.
